Delorme Earthmate PN-40 July 26, 2010 shelton difficult to navigate menus. protective screen scratches easy. battery life is horrible. I had to change batteries daily during a recent backpacking trip. good cost though but would not buy again.
Perfect for GeoCaching July 23, 2010 Erik Wisniewski After much online research, I decided on the DeLorme PN-40 as my first GPS and I am very happy that I did so. I am new to geocaching but I have been out searching almost every day both before and after work and I am having a complete blast! The PN-40 has made paperless caching simple and fast by allowing the user to download the caches to the GPS directly from [...], negating the need to print out pages of data. I can then quickly "log the finds" on the unit and upload my notes to the [...] website when I get home. As someone who is used to texting with my phone, I don't find it difficult to use the on-screen keyboard to type my notes, but for people with less hand strength, I could see pushing the buttons to get difficult for long messages.
Yes, installing the street maps was NOT easy, but that was partially my own fault. As a person who never reads manuals, it took me most of a weekend to figure out how to install the street maps, but now that I have done so, it's quite easy. I've installed street maps (for ALL of South Carolina and all of Pennsylvania east of the Susquehanna river) and there is PLENTY of leftover space on the card (Amazon's unit had the 2 gig card instead of the advertised 1 gig card). I have not installed any of the aerial maps or other maps available online, as I wanted to use the unit for a few months to see which maps I'd use.
The USB cable, when connected to a PC, acts as the power supply, saving batteries. I purchased a power cord to use in my car, as well as the mounting bracket for the car, so I don't use battery power when driving, either.
When using the driving directions for the GPS, the unit will sound a tone when you are getting close to your next turn, and again immediately before the turn. However, this tone is not very loud and cannot be heard when the windows are down or when the radio is on. However, I personally am not using this unit as much for driving directions as much as I purchased it for geocaching, so that's not an issue.
As for accuracy, my unit easily gets me within 10 feet of caches, even under tree cover. I have only had one instance of "jumping", where the unit just could not pinpoint a location under heavy tree cover. To be fair, though, the unit was very hot as I left it on the dash of my car while shopping. When I returned to the same cache later in the week, it led me to the cache location with very little "jumping".
In summary, this unit fit my particular requirements quite well, and by reading other Amazon reviews, I was mentally prepared for the challenge of learning how to install maps. I love the unit and have discovered a wonderful new hobby.
WOW!!! what a great GPS unit July 21, 2010 Cub Scout Leader (Florida) I'm new to using a GPS unit, but I'm blown away with the features this unit has.
I do hiking with a local Boy Scout unit, and this unit tracks my path, distance and time effortlesly.
I realy like the fact that the TOPO maps come with the unit when other manufactures have you purchase them as additional items.
The additional map subscription is also a great deal. I'v downloaded my entire city and surrounding countryside already in areal views.
I use the unit for geocaching also, Ihave my 15 year old daughter hooked on caching now.
PN-40 July 13, 2010 JR60 Had difficulty uploading maps to the gps because I have a Macbook and the maps were formatted pc.
Simple fixes would make this perfect. July 11, 2010 Nicholas E. Reiter (West Decatur, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wanted a gps that i could 1) use to upload tcx or gpx files to for road biking, 2) have topos to use while hiking, and 3) to use as a "car gps" (like the garmin nuvis or something).
so with respect to reason 1) :
I also have a garmin forerunner, which i can quickly and conveniently send tcx courses to with one click on [...] using the Garmin Communicator plugin. It is extremely convenient and takes literally 3 seconds to upload a course. However, DeLorme has no such plugin, and requires me to download a gpx file to my hard drive, open up their bulky mapping software, and then send it to the device. It takes only a few extra minutes, but its just annoying for me after having my garmin (which, by the way, is a wrist watch class of GPS than the PN 40 or the Garmin equivalent of the Oregon or something, Forerunners dont have maps).
with respect to reason 2) :
Out of the box, with 1 gig storage, you can only have 2 states worth of topos. This isnt a problem if you arent traveling a lot (or if you spend a few bux for a bigger SD card). But my issue was that I took this year off to hike through chile and peru, and it only came with topos from the states. The Garmin equivalent is preloaded with topos for all over the world, from what I've read. But if you are just using this for the states, that isnt an issue.
with respect to reason 3) :
The GUI for the "car gps" function is very clumsy. I've used my moms Garmin Nuvi (which is strictly a car gps type) which has an excellent user friendly GUI that requires only common sense to use. Using the PN 40 for this purpose was just frustrating. It would not have been difficult to replicate such a feature in this device.
So, if you dont use courses or tracks (or dont mind a multi step way of uploading), dont mind having 2 states at a time in the device (or dont mind buying a 16 gig SD card, they are admittedly cheap but come on! im a college student! : P), and already have a car GPS or arent planning on using this feature in the car, then this GPS will fit all your needs. The topos are detailed, the maps have all the road I biked on. The course turning directions are perfect (better than my forerunner which gets left and right hand turns wrong, and doesnt alert me until im in the intersection!)
